Let’s Blog!

My friend and mentor (though I have no idea if he realizes that or not) gave my husband and I some advice about being writers… a few months ago.

That person is John Hartness. Now, I am pretty good at following advice, but this one took me a while. His advice: write every day and blog often. That’s how you develop your voice as a writer, and voice is one of those things you can’t be taught. You have to develop it through practice.

So, I am going to put some good use and do what he says.

Here goes.

Today I’m thinking about deadlines. I just sent a story back to my editor Sunday night, but I have a story I’d like to submit to the Curious Insidents anthology being published soon. The problem is that my story isn’t quite a story yet and the deadline is Oct. 14. You read that right… three days from now. That wouldn’t normally be a problem except I also have about 60 essays waiting for grading and some deadlines for editing.

I really want to submit to this anthology (and hope to get in!) because it has a wonderful editor (A. C. Thompson) and is being put out by a press I’ve been involved with several times (Mocha Memoirs) so I know they’re good people.

I would also like to participate (and win) NaNoWriMo this year. I have all the tools I need to do it. I just need to figure out my time, outline, and choose which project I want to write.

That’s enough for today, but I’ll be back tomorrow (hopefully) updating my progress on the Sherlock story!
