The Moments We Remember My writing career is still very young, but there are a few moments that I know I will never forget. The first is the day I was standing in the laundry room and started screaming because I'd opened up my acceptance letter for AN IMPROBABLE TRUTH. Another is the first time… Continue reading Coming Soon: TRIALS, Rogue Mage Anthology
Happy November! It's a rainy and sort of warm-ish morning (70 degrees) here in South Carolina, but I'm still smiling! Why is that, you ask? I have a cup of coffee, a clean desk, and a story at least somewhat planned out! I even made myself a little cover for it in hopes that it… Continue reading It’s Time for NaNoWriMo!
My friend and mentor (though I have no idea if he realizes that or not) gave my husband and I some advice about being writers... a few months ago. That person is John Hartness. Now, I am pretty good at following advice, but this one took me a while. His advice: write every day and… Continue reading Let’s Blog!
I am over at Magical Words today talking about my top ten tips for working with a professional editor and how they're remarkably similar to interacting with your college professors! Click HERE to visit the post!
I am over at Magical Words writing about a panel I was on (as my editor self) at ConGregate last weekend: Finding the Right Editor!
I'm over at Magical Words talking about Style Sheets. For a glimpse inside my editorial process, come on over!
I’m over at Magical Words again today writing about all the things I learned and tips I gathered while at ConCarolinas this past weekend. Come check out all the resources! Click HERE to go to Magical Words.
It's Monday. That means another ConCarolinas is on the books, and I'm brain addled trying to mentally condense all the information that I collected during the past three days. (I love Evernote for that, by the way.) So, here are some of my possibly not entirely coherent thoughts on the convention as a whole. It… Continue reading ConCarolinas 2016 Wrap-Up
Writers wear a lot of hats. And socks, too. With monkeys on them. Well, at least I do. Some of the other hats I wear are mom, wife, daughter, professor, book reviewer, editor, and personal assistant. Yep, all those! But, I wanted today to tell you a little about (okay, shamelessly self-promote) my editing business,… Continue reading Those Other Things…
Hey, look! I did a thing! I made it to the top ten in the Mocha Memoirs Press: Women in Horror 2016 Flash Fiction contest! The Top Ten stories were chosen by a panel of Mocha Memoirs "Ladies of Horror" and will be compiled into a micro-anthology used to promote the press. I will be… Continue reading Ladies of Horror Competition
Fall is my favorite season. I love all of the fall things: pumpkins (not PSL), football, Halloween, crisp air, changing leaves, apples, and so on. But, the past few years I have developed a love for the late spring and summer as well because of the conventions! This year I am attending three conventions (so… Continue reading Convention Season is Coming!
I am not really all that big on resolutions. Most of the time, we break them and give up, but I do like setting goals. The new year is a great time to reflect on what I've accomplished and what I've still go to do.
Hey you. Yeah, you. Do you have plans this Saturday? How about coming out to The BooKnack in Rock Hill to come see us, buy books, and hang out? Even if you don't buy a book, we'd love to see you! Let's fill the store with SpookyLocks and Sherlockians! Who's in? Click HERE for the… Continue reading Got Plans?
AtomaCon was great. Let me tell you. My favorite thing about conventions is getting to spend time with my friends - this wonderful group of folks that I have had the pleasure to get to know over the past few years.
Good morning, afternoon, evening, and all those things! I'd like to announce that the first three Maggie stories -- The Weaver's Fate, The Magician's Secret, and The Water's Edge -- will be available later this week in paperback! I chose to go ahead and publish them this way because so many people were asking about… Continue reading Maggie in Print!?
I walked down the bricked path that hundreds--perhaps thousands--travel every day and was lost deep in my thoughts when a shoulder brushed mine, too close but scarcely noticed. In that moment, that glimpse of the stale horror of reality, I saw something odd. A thin white snake was slithering up the man's body and into his ears. I followed the… Continue reading The White Snake
I think I am going to participate in NaNoWriMo this year. The problem is that I can't really decide which story to work on.
It's a new shiny! Look! It wants my attention! It's talking to me! That's pretty much how I feel right now about my latest WIP. Sometimes as writers, we get distracted by the new idea and have trouble sitting down to the one we should be working on. For example, I really should be working… Continue reading Something New!?
I'm writing about genre and the upcoming release of An Improbable Truth over at Magical Words today! Come on over and join in the conversation! Probably Improbable and Genre at Magical Words
Coming October 27, 2015!!! “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” Sherlock Holmes is one of the most recognizable characters in Western literature. Conan Doyle’s inimitable detective has been the subject of literally thousands of books, movies, television shows, plays and even songs. With the rise of the… Continue reading COVER REVEAL! An Improbable Truth: The Paranormal Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Final edits have been submitted! (And I have to say that I am so lucky because my editor is totally awesome. I love her to bits!) What am I talking about? Oh yeah...I forgot to post. (I did share on Facebook and Twitter though!) A few months back, I submitted a short story to an… Continue reading New Release Coming!
Summer is nearly over, and I am so behind on writing. I've had a ton of editing work (which is great, of course!) but that means my daily word count has been lacking. Add in changing jobs and teaching a summer camp for 4th-7th graders, and my summer has been a wild ride. Summer camps… Continue reading What a Ride!
These are my panel notes from the "Fantasy the World Over" panel at ConCarolinas 2015. Panelists: Andi O'Conner, AJ Hartley, David B. Coe, Misty Massey, Faith Hunter Question: How Important Is Setting? AJH: June, A Perfect Storm, Cape Fear are all good examples of man against environment where the environment makes a big difference in… Continue reading ConCarolinas Wrap-Up ~ Fantasy the World Over
These are my notes from the Friday evening panel on Setting the Mood. Panelists: Darin Kennedy, Wendy S. Delmater, AJ Hartley, Faith Hunter, David B. Coe DBC: Character's voice, ambiance, and setting all need to appear on the first page. FH: Write what you know. Character can come from setting. Avoid purple prose. WD: World… Continue reading ConCarolinas Wrap-Up ~ Setting the Mood
ConCarolinas is my favorite convention. It's a local con, just across the NC/SC border from me, so it's almost like a great big reunion with all my favorite people every year. This year was a little different though. This was my first year going to the con as a guest! I was accepted as an… Continue reading ConCarolinas 2015 Wrap-Up
I'm meeting with some of my favorite folks and fellow writers this evening for a few hours of writing. I'll be working on the third Maggie the Gatherer story, "The Water's Edge." This story picks up after "The Magician's Secret" and we get to find out what the Guides decide about Maggie's magic! Oh, and… Continue reading Maggie #3
I have a confession to make.
"The Magician's Secret" is available now on Amazon. (Here's a link.) It's my favorite in the series so far (well, there are only two...) and I really hope you enjoy it as well. What's inside? A magician with a secret, carnival food, a creepy fortune teller, dudes rolling around in the dirt, people hiding in bushes, and lots more. Sounds fun, huh?
I'm nearly finished writing the second installment of the Maggie the Gatherer short story series. In this story, Maggie, Jordan, and Julius visit a traveling carnival. Shenanigans ensue. There's a hot guy, and he has a secret. It's coming in about 2 weeks!
The second installment in my Maggie the Gatherer series will be available on Amazon on April 13, 2015! Are you ready for the title? Maggie #2 will be titled "The Magician's Secret." Description In "The Magician's Secret," we come back to Maggie and the crew about a month after "The Weaver's Fate." Jordan has come back… Continue reading Maggie #2 – Release Date and Title
I'm still having a hard time believing it, but I just published my first work on Amazon! "The Weaver's Fate" is the first in a series of short stories about Maggie. Maggie is a Gatherer, living in a mundane world but with the power to gather magic. In this world, magic is finite and tends to… Continue reading The Weaver’s Fate is Available!
