Coming Soon: TRIALS, Rogue Mage Anthology

The Moments We Remember

My writing career is still very young, but there are a few moments that I know I will never forget. The first is the day I was standing in the laundry room and started screaming because I’d opened up my acceptance letter for AN IMPROBABLE TRUTH. Another is the first time I was accepted to a convention as a literary guest.

Today I get to add another.

Press Release: We Are Not This

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHARLOTTE SMALL PRESS RELEASES CHARITY ANTHOLOGY PROTESTING HB2

For Details, contact John G. Hartness
john@falstaffbooks.com

10/25/16

In an “October Surprise” for Governor Pat McCrory and members of the NC General Assembly, Charlotte-based micro-press Falstaff Books today released We Are Not This – Carolina Writers for Equality. The anthology, a collection of 31 short stories, poems, and essays by North Carolina writers or writers who feel a strong tie to the Carolinas, was created as a response to HB2, the divisive “bathroom bill” passed by the NC General Assembly earlier this year.

We Are Not This includes stories from NY Times bestselling author A. J. Hartley, noted singer-songwriter David Childers, Bram Stoker Award nominee Jake Bible, Charlotte Observer columnist and longtime educator Kay McSpadden, Hugo-award nominated editor Edmund Schubert, and a host of other writers. The anthology is currently available as an ebook and will be available in print within the month.

In his introduction, publisher John G. Hartness writes, “We understand that people are people, and all people deserve to be protected from discrimination. We understand that insuring equal rights for one group does not take away rights from another group. We understand that laws restricting freedom and taking away someone’s chance for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the opposite of the values that this country was founded upon. We understand that we are stronger together, and that love is love.”

Proceeds from the sale of the anthology will be divided among NC-centric LGBTQ charities, non-profits, and lobbying organizations. The first group of organizations to receive funding will be Time Out Youth, Queen City Theatre Company, and EqualityNC.

release date September 6, 2016

SALEM – Shadows in Salem is a collection of spooky short stories set in Salem, MA.  The book features many local authors, as well as authors both near and far.  The book is available to the public on September 6, 2016, and was produced right here in the Witch City!  What better time to read something wicked as the fall tourist season begins in Salem!  The September 6th release date gives tourists a chance to take a little piece of Salem home with them in the pages of this anthology.  Look for upcoming FunDead Publications events in and around the Witch City.

About Shadows in Salem

13392279_1097887660268556_9147568924913919844_oFor anyone who knows the history, Salem, Massachusetts has more than a few stories to tell. Travel to the Witch City within the pages of these collected short stories, and know the captivating nature of one of the oldest towns in America. Feel the summer breeze at Salem Willows and smell the scent of mulled cider drifting down Derby Street. See the wharf from a birds-eye-view, feel your toes in the sand while the sun sets over Dead Horse Beach, and find the secrets that reside in the very cracks of three-hundred-year-old tombstones in the Old Burying Ground. Spend a night among ghosts and witches and know the magic of Salem, where myth and legend collide with truth. Do beware, dear friends, for the Witch City has a dark side, and there is more to those legends than what you might read in the pages of an old book. Remember to look over your shoulder, for you never know what shadows follow you down that dimly lit corridor.

Maggie in Print!?

Good morning, afternoon, evening, and all those things!

I’d like to announce that the first three Maggie stories — The Weaver’s Fate, The Magician’s Secret, and The Water’s Edge — will be available later this week in paperback!

I chose to go ahead and publish them this way because so many people were asking about reading them but didn’t want to read the electronic version. I completely understand. I love the feel of an actual book as well.

Here’s a look at the cover!

Redemption Book Cover

Part Two will have stories 4, 5, and 6; however, I am considering not releasing any of those until I can do a collection of the three. I’m still figuring out the best way to do these things. 🙂  I hope to have that out by January 2016.

COVER REVEAL! An Improbable Truth: The Paranormal Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Coming October 27, 2015!!!

“When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most recognizable characters in Western literature.  Conan Doyle’s inimitable detective has been the subject of literally thousands of books, movies, television shows, plays and even songs.  With the rise of the BBC series and the release of all copyrights, the beloved character has found a new life among modern audiences.

In An Improbable Truth: The Paranormal Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 14 authors of horror and mystery have come together to create a unique anthology that sets Holmes on some of his most terrifying adventures.  A pair of sisters willing to sacrifice young girls to an ancient demon for a taste of success, a sinister device that can manipulate time itself, and a madman that can raise corpses from the dead are just a few among the grisly tales that can be found within these pages.

Curl up with a warm cuppa and leave all the lights on.

This is not your grandfather’s Sherlock Holmes.

Look at this list of stories!  Doesn’t it sound fantastic?

  • The Fairy Pool by Lucy Blue
  • Sherlock Holmes and the Hungry Ghost by Katie Magnusson
  • The Diamond Carter Ghost by Matthew Wilson
  • The Haunted Branch Line by Tally Johnson
  • The Arendall Horror by Thomas Olbert
  • Worlds Collide by S. H. Roddey
  • Time is Running Out, Watson by Adrian Cross
  • A Voice in the Blood by Dan Shaurette
  • The Hunt of the Red Boar by Thomas Fortenberry
  • The Canaries of Clee Hills Mine by Robert Perret
  • The Chase by Melissa McArthur
  • The Adventure of the Missing Trophy by Mark W. Coulter
  • The Case of the Rising Dead by Trenton Mabey
  • The Adventure of the Slow Death by Harding McFadden

I know, I know… I’m stalling.  It’s called BUILDING THE SUSPENSE.  But now, without further ado…

Isn’t this cover BEAUTIFUL!?

New Release Coming!

Final edits have been submitted!

(And I have to say that I am so lucky because my editor is totally awesome. I love her to bits!)

What am I talking about? Oh yeah…I forgot to post. (I did share on Facebook and Twitter though!)

A few months back, I submitted a short story to an open call for submissions for a super awesome sounding anthology — Sherlock Holmes with a paranormal twist!

I waited patiently (read: on the edge of my seat, psychotically checking email) for a response, completely expecting yet another rejection. Then one day I was doing laundry when my phone made the familiar ding that signals I have email. I opened my email and screamed. My husband thought I’d been attacked by the monster that eats our socks. My story, “The Chase,” had been accepted to the anthology!

So, be on the lookout for numerous posts and shares for An Improbable Truth: The Paranormal Adventures of Sherlock Holmes coming out October 27, 2015 from Mocha Memoirs Press.

Look for the cover reveal next week and join in the discussion using the hashtag #SpookyLock on Facebook and Twitter.

Maggie #3

I’m meeting with some of my favorite folks and fellow writers this evening for a few hours of writing. I’ll be working on the third Maggie the Gatherer story, “The Water’s Edge.”

This story picks up after “The Magician’s Secret” and we get to find out what the Guides decide about Maggie’s magic! Oh, and there are dead bodies washing ashore and waves full of jellyfish. It’ll be fun!

Release date: May 28, 2015

So, here’s the cover! It’s my favorite so far. What do you think?

The Magician’s Secret Cover

I’m nearly finished writing the second installment of the Maggie the Gatherer short story series. In this story, Maggie, Jordan, and Julius visit a traveling carnival. Shenanigans ensue. There’s a hot guy, and he has a secret. It’s coming in about 2 weeks!

Would you like to see the cover?

Devil man with long hair and black coat

So…what do you think? Do you like it?

I can’t wait to get this story out to you!

Maggie #2 – Release Date and Title

The second installment in my Maggie the Gatherer series will be available on Amazon on April 13, 2015!

Are you ready for the title?

Maggie #2 will be titled “The Magician’s Secret.”

Description

In “The Magician’s Secret,” we come back to Maggie and the crew about a month after “The Weaver’s Fate.” Jordan has come back into town, this time without Gabrielle. Maggie, Jordan, and Julius visit a traveling carnival passing through, but where they expect to find stage tricks and high-priced hot dogs, instead they find a twisted web of magic, debts owed, and mysterious fortunes.

Stay tuned for the cover reveal coming April 2!
